Hartney
Hartney is in the southwestern corner of the province along the Souris River. Hartney is approximately 80 km southwest of Brandon in the Rural Municipality of Grassland.
Named after the James Hartney, a merchant, farmer and political figure in Manitoba, Hartney was founded in 1882.
Hartney offers services to the surrounding agricultural area, which include an arena, a school, a 9-hole golf course, and a swimming pool. The community celebrates the annual Hopper Days every August, drawing slo-pitch softball teams from across southwestern Manitoba.
Several movies have filmed in Hartney, including The Lookout starring Jeff Daniels and Joseph Gordon-Levitt and the 2006 adaptation of Margaret Laurence’s The Stone Angel.
Sunrise Credit Union has been a part of the Hartney community since 1942, operating as The Deleau Credit Union Society Ltd and then as Hartney Credit Union Society Ltd.
On October 1, 2008, after 66 years of operation, Hartney Credit Union became part of a new entity, Sunrise Credit Union.
