Baldur

Baldur Branch

Baldur is in the scenic Rural Municipality of Argyle in the southwestern part of Manitoba. It is approximately 100 kilometres southeast of Brandon.

The coming of the railway was the precursor to the community being founded in 1880. Its name reflects the Icelandic heritage of the people in the community and the Norse god Baldr.

Baldur is the birthplace of eight-time Stanley Cup winner and Hockey Hall of Famer Tom Johnson and award-winning author and naturalist Bill Stilwell. The community is also home to the Baldur Regals baseball team, which was inducted into the Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame in 2015.

The Baldur-Glenboro Gazette is a weekly newspaper that serves Baldur and the surrounding communities of Belmont, Cypress River, Glenboro, Glenora, Ninette, Stockton, Treesbank and Wawanesa.

The origins of Sunrise Credit Union in the community date back to 1997. The Baldur Economic Development Committee approached the Cypress River Credit Union Board of Directors with a request to provide a credit union branch in the community. Once necessary approvals were granted, the new Cypress River Credit Union branch opened for business on January 6, 1998. It joined Sunrise Credit Union on October 1, 2008, through the strategic merger of five credit unions, including Cypress River.
